Study: Travel Patterns in US and UK Reveal Surprising Shifts

May 29, 2024
Study: Travel Patterns in US and UK Reveal Surprising Shifts

In an era marked by changing travel behaviors and evolving consumer interests, recent data from Semrush offers an illuminating snapshot of how travelers in the US and the UK plan their getaways. The study, tracking the most popular travel-related search terms and website traffic over the past 16 months from January 2023 to April 2024, reveals surprising trends and significant shifts in destination preferences.

US Travel Trends: Shifting Sands and Emerging Hotspots

The Resilient Appeal of Las Vegas

Las Vegas continues to shine as a top travel destination. Despite overall stability in travel searches over the last 12 months from January 2023 to April 2024, with a modest -4.1% decrease in total search volume, "hotels in Las Vegas" maintained an average of 364,000 monthly searches, peaking at 450,000 in January 2023. This sustained popularity underscores Las Vegas's enduring appeal, bolstered by its vibrant entertainment scene.

Chicago's Summer Surge

Chicago emerged as another travel hotspot, particularly during the summer. The search term "hotels in Chicago" experienced an 82.8% increase from January 2023 to April 2024, peaking at 301,000 searches in the summer months. This spike aligns with the city's bustling summer festival season, drawing tourists eager to experience Chicago's cultural and recreational offerings.

The Decline of Miami and San Diego

Not all destinations fared well. Miami, traditionally a favored getaway, saw a notable decline. Searches for "hotels in Miami" dropped by 4.3% in 2024, despite peaking at 368,000 searches in March and April 2023. This decline could be attributed to economic pressures or shifting traveler preferences toward less crowded destinations.

Similarly, San Diego witnessed an 18.2% drop in searches for "hotels in San Diego," even though it experienced a peak in June and July 2023 with 301,000 searches. The overall downward trend suggests a possible waning interest in the sunny city.

Travel Advisories and International Interest

Impact of Travel Advisories

Travel advisories had a significant impact on search behaviors. The phrase "travel warnings to usa" surged by 82.4% from January 2023 to April 2024. This spike highlights how geopolitical events and government advisories can drastically alter travel plans and search interests.
Recent data reveals a dramatic rise in safety-related travel queries, indicating heightened concerns among travelers about the security of destinations such as Paris, Ecuador, Dubai, and Turkey. Searches for "is it safe to travel" to these locations have surged dramatically, reflecting anxieties fueled by regional tensions, crises, and geopolitical events.

Notably, queries about Paris spiked by 528.6%, while those for Ecuador, Dubai, and Turkey increased by 400%, 306.3%, and 302.8%, respectively. These trends suggest that modern travelers are increasingly vigilant and reliant on real-time information to make informed decisions about their travel plans, emphasizing the crucial role of accurate and timely safety updates in the travel industry.

Renewed Interest in International Travel

There was also a notable resurgence in interest in international travel. Searches for "visa to travel to europe" soared by 1,284.6% over the last year, reflecting growing confidence in traveling to Europe. This surge is likely driven by the easing of travel restrictions and an increasing desire for international vacations.

UK Travel Trends: A Tale of Contrasts

The total average monthly search volume for travel-related keywords in the UK stands at 11,685,410, reflecting a slight increase of 3.3% from January 2023 to April 2024. This overall stability masks more dramatic changes in specific destination searches and travel-related queries, painting a complex picture of British travel behavior.

London's Surprising Decline

One of the most startling findings is the significant drop in searches for "hotels in London." Once a steadfast favorite, searches plummeted by 17.9%, from 201,000 in January 2023 to 165,000 in April 2024. Despite this decline, London remains a key destination with “hotels in london” as the most searched keyword in the UK for hotels, suggesting that tourists might be exploring alternative accommodations or booking methods. Other major cities decreased in interest – searches for "hotels in blackpool" dropped by 18.3%, while "hotels in paris" saw a decline by 33.3% from January 2023 to April 2024.

Edinburgh's Rising Popularity.

In contrast, Edinburgh has emerged as a rising star among UK travel destinations. The term "hotels in Edinburgh" saw a 22.3% increase from January to April 2023-2024, with notable peaks in July and October 2023, each reaching 110,000 online searches. This uptick reflects Edinburgh's growing appeal, possibly driven by its cultural festivals and historical charm.

Stable but Seasonal: York, Liverpool, and Bath.

Searches for "hotels in York" remained stable over the year, with significant interest in October and November 2023, likely tied to local events or holidays. Similarly, "hotels in Liverpool" and "hotels in Bath" maintained a steady search volume.

Safety Concerns Dominate Search Trends

The data indicates a substantial increase in safety-related searches, particularly for destinations like Hurghada, Iceland, Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, and Dubai. Searches for "is it safe to travel to Hurghada right now" skyrocketed by 17,900% from January 2023 to April 2024, signaling concern among potential visitors. Similarly, queries about the safety of traveling to Iceland surged by 15,900%. These dramatic increases reflect heightened apprehensions about security and safety, likely influenced by geopolitical developments, regional instability, or recent incidents in these areas.

Interest in Travel to the UK Remains Strong

Travel-related searches for the UK remain robust, with significant increases in queries for travel insurance and cheap train travel. Searches for "travel insurance to UK" rose by 49.4% from January 2023 to April 2024, indicating that travelers are increasingly cautious and prefer to safeguard their trips against potential disruptions. Additionally, searches for "cheap train travel to London" increased by 22.7%, reflecting a strong interest in affordable travel options within the UK However, interest in train travel from Manchester to London saw a decline of 18.5%, suggesting a possible shift in preferred travel routes or methods.

Resurgence in Queries About Popular Destinations

Searches for the best places to travel in the UK grew by 22.3% from January 2023 to April 2024, demonstrating renewed interest in exploring the country. This trend aligns with the overall increase in travel-related searches to European destinations, such as Greece and Cyprus, where safety concerns have also spiked. The heightened interest in these destinations suggests that, despite safety worries, travelers are eager to explore new and familiar locations.

Decline in COVID-19 Related Travel Restrictions

Interestingly, there has been a marked decrease in searches related to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Queries about "travel to France restrictions" dropped to zero, a 100% decrease from January 2023 to April 2024, and searches for "unvaccinated travel to USA" fell by 99.6% for the same period of time. This decline indicates that travelers are less concerned about pandemic-related restrictions and more focused on general safety and travel logistics. The easing of restrictions and the global move towards normalcy likely contribute to this trend.
